Not the worst movie ever, but it's just ridiculous that it's in a race for so many Oscars including best film. The whole film is ridiculous, in fact. Firstly, bad timing for most of music insets, that I felt just enough of it after 30 mins. Disappointing performances, even by Bale, I think that for many people his gaining weight and look actually blurred the fact that it wasn't any special acting. Amy Adams was amazing though, if we forget some embarassing moments( like ectasy sitting on a toilet). Jen Law? It was like she felt uncomfortable in her character all the time.
And I hated elongated, meaningless dialogues that had nothing to do with general plot, which was chaotic anyway. It didn't need over 2 hours, that's why the movie feels pointless. Really, I can't understand what people see in it.

you wouldn't think almost two hours of people bickering would entertain, but the incredible performances of the central five cast members make it so. every character is beautifully realised, infuriating and alluring in their own very distinctive ways.

It's audience reviews like the ones on these comments that make me miss Roger Ebert and make me wonder what he would have to say.

Not the best movie of the year, but not the worst. I completely ignored the hype around the movie going into this. Every scene is a homage to Martin Scorsese and his movies. They even had a trunk shot (from Goodfellas)!

I don't get how this movie got 10 nominations for Oscars though. It's not that good.

In another desperate attempt to leave his mark on cinema, David O. Russell bites off more than he can chew with this year's American Hustle.

AH is a better effort than both Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter, and yet it is still a mediocre mess of a film. That just shows you how far off his game David O.Russell is in the 2010s. What happened to the David who gave us Three Kings or I Heart Huckabees? Those were much more manageable and personal efforts. And the results, while not legacy-making or Academy Award-accumulating, were at least respectable.

These days it seems Russell is trying so hard to leave a legacy and match up to the kind of filmmakers he grew up idolizing, that he's just reaching too hard and too high. There is Oscar-bait (which he is certainly guilty of), but even worse there is Lifetime Achievement-bait. The result is a product that reeks of soulless narcissism and delusions of grandeur.

In short, Russell is just simply not as good of a filmmaker as he would like to think he is.

What a fucking mess. The last hour spins out into nutiness. I feel bad for the main actors. They were solid in this garbage.

Why was Christian Bale aping James Gandolfini/Tony Soprano throughout? Absurd performance. The soundtrack was over-egged as well. Not worthy of much praise, really.

If the actual movie was as hard-hitting as the trailer I would have enjoyed the movie a lot more.
The impeccable acting, wardrobe and soundtrack does not compensate for the lack of an intriguing plot line.
I'm really confused on where I stand with this movie. It has the glamorous Scorsese feel but it lacks in depth. Which is why I give it a solid 7 out of 10.

Pretty much forgettable really. Decent acting is not enough alone to carry any film.
You know something is lacking when the director has to resort to excessive use of music montages, and having the lead actresses cleavage on display in every other scene.

Alright, this is indeed overrated. I liked it and enjoyed it but it wasn't special. The best thing about this movie is the performances by both Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, they were both sensational. Amy Adams truly proved herself to be an incredible actress after American Hustle and The Fighter and I was wowed by Lawrence's performance. In my opinion she keeps on getting better and better.

Another point, I do not at all understand why people are comparing this to Scorsese's films AT ALL. American Hustle might aspire to be able to give a hint of that Scorsese feeling but, that did not work on me a bit, maybe only the jukebox medley of 70s hits that O Russell has dropped on us? OR the DeNiro cameo? OR some camera angles maybe? I didn't get that magical feeling I get when I watch pre2000 Scorsese films. I do not see how this is a revival of 70s gangster films that are rich with accents and stylish street scenery.
Please stop doing that comparing thing, it's fucking annoying.

Bale acted awesome, nice soundtrack, nice cast, overall a nice movie. However that doesn't change it is an overrated one.
