This just entered the IMDb Top 250 at #92. This has clearly gone too far.

A comment to people who bash this film:

I know I have said earlier that it is only funny to Indians, or "If you are not Indian, this might be next to crap," I would like to make that comment very clear. I agree that this is a terribly made film. I do not rate this highly. But being an Indian and growing up in a time when this movie was on its way to being a cable success, I understand why people like it so much. One needs to situate themselves culturally to be able to understand why a culture finds something so amusing and others don't. This is Hababam Sinifi all over again. Like Hababam, this film has terribly translated subtitles. What you see are silly gags, but what people love about this film and what has become a part of the culture are the jokes.

I personally don't find them funny, but I understand why people do. I also find it better to understand why something is regarded as "good" or "funny" rather than just being supercilious. I too did not do this in past as much I should have.

In sum, this is a terribly made film, indeed. But like many comedy films, this film never claimed to be Citizen Kane.

A quick comment to Indian raters on IMDb:

Please assess the value of cinema overall and decide what every point on a scale of 1 to 10 means to you, and then rate a film. If you rate this film a 10, you are implying it is as good as all the films that should be rated as a 10. For example, the Bicycle Thief or Citizen Kane, which many people regard as some of the best films ever made, are some examples that can be considered as 10. You rating Andaz Apna Apna a 10 says that it is as good as Citizen Kane, if not better -- which, to me is vexing.

This movie is crap. I know some jokes may only be understood by Indians, but I'm sure the other 99% is just crap. Bad, or rather, annoying acting, terrible jokes, cheesy scenes, countless childish jokes, no laughs, bad dubbing, mediocre camera work, at times even very bad, poor cutting, boring and somewhat repetitive, way too long, terrible sound effects which are used every other minute. The score, as well as the general flow of the events taking place, lack any sort of dynamics, much like a poorly mastered record. It's a continuously loud, up-tempo and very exhausting. The bare story itself could have been alright if only the movie didn't fail on so many levels.

If you like silly comedy or if you're Indian, you could enjoy this movie :-)

Life as Fiction

"You have to be Indian" is a silly defense for this film. It's simply not a good film, mostly because it outstays its welcome. There's a period during which it's actually well-paced, until the gags just become overused and annoying. It reminds me heavily of Pineapple Express, where the gags last for half the film until you just want it to end.

I'm almost offended by the accusation that this could only be funny to Indians. I swear you could dub this into Spanish and sell it in Mexico. I'm not known for 'liking' comedies. And I won't go so far as to say I 'liked' AAA, but it is a middling piece of silliness and neither the worst movie ever made nor the best comedy known to humankind. I have to wonder why the actors get so much of the blame. Would RSC actors have made a difference? No, surely the issues are the responsibility of the director/writer. Lighten up folks and take it for what it is - a piece of 90s broad comedy kitsch produced by the Bollywood (musical) hit factory.

PS - Was the whole movie recorded in post (with echo effect) or is it just the Shemaroo DVD? And whoever insisted on the sound cues needs to be taken out for a whipping.

PPS - Best comedy I've seen since San Andreas. (And that's not saying much.) And clearly this movie is self-aware. Case in point: Crime Master Gogo. Silly. Yes. All he forgot to do was tie the heroine(s) to the railroad tracks. "Curses. Foiled again!" [pulls curled mostache]

I'd describe this as a bollywood version of a slapstick movie with Home Alone type badguys, Roadrunner/wile-e-coyote type accidents and overly expressive faces. Which makes the humor seem a bit childish and dated.

absolute horrible crap. what the hell is it doing in the list. stupid imdb.com, with less then 10000 votes (bet 90% of them indian). Such lame acting. Please go to imdb.com and vote, to get it our from here.
There are so many so mediocre movis gets in the imdb list cause only no body watches them. There are some really food indian movies and its not one of them.
