Fantastic. First rate cast - Jackie Weaver's gotten a lot of critical attention, rightly, but I thought Ben Mendelsohn as Pope was particularly awesome that I didn't expect from the things I've seen him in before. A great, subtle performance of mundane evil.
This reminded me quite a bit of Snowtown, thematically and atmospherically. Both are set in Australia and deal with an intellectually (and morally?) stunted male youth surrounded by friends and family who draw him into a world of crime and malevolence, with tragic results. While Animal Kingdom isn't as brutal or disturbing, the same feeling of inexorable doom pervades throughout. Most importantly, both films are extremely well-made and boast outstanding performances.
Nice to see that Jackie Weaver is up for best supporting actress at this year's Oscars. Especially after last year when not a single Australian movie was recognised.
Great movie..so sad that for all the movies that get made in Australia each year, only a small amount seem to be worthwhile. Most of the good actors go to Hollywood and it's hard to get them to return - luckily a few did for this one.

Its not gonna make my Top 10 of the Year, but its better than the critical darling that is The Town. Not tons better, but still better.KurtHarder
Made movies like The Kids Are Alright and Winter's Bone look like amateur films.Showing items 1 – 15 of 18
