This mess is very puzzling I agree.
At the very least you shouldn't check this if you've only seen inaccurately labeled 'Serpentine Dances' on The Movies Begin boxset by Kino. The first part of that is evidently one of butterly dances performed by Annabelle at least twice for Edison, you can differentiate between them by a boxed C on the floor. ICM link for it is most probably Annabelle Butterfly Dance. The second part is a serpentine dance by unknown woman.
Anyway, I suppose you can rely on our youtube links for both checks.
(The Viva la Dance-Unseen Cinema DVD features three versions of Annabelle's Serpentine Dance, as well as two versions of her Butterfly Dance, one of her Sun Dance, and two films of the Serpentine Dance as performed by others.) In the "Filmography", Musser also includes two unidentified versions of Annabelle performing the Serpentine Dance. He suspects that one of them was made in the fall of 1894 and the other, which Annabelle performs barefoot, was made sometime between 1895 and 1897. William K.L. Dickson also filmed Annabelle's Serpentine Dance and other dances for American Mutoscope in 1896. Overall, that's six films of Annabelle performing the Serpentine Dance.
This is incredibly beautiful.
