Because of only Mayan language and actors, the setting of the film, the extreme (but realistic) violence and the flow of the movie one of my top favorites.
Underrated movie based on the score on IMDB.
A spectacular, brutal, and powerful film - more an experience, really - that will linger in your mind for many moons. At the start, the tribe are portrayed as human: humorous, sweet and bonded by community, having both vigilant fearless warriors and a deep ominous, respectful awareness that extends into the heart and beyond into the spiritual. Then, in true Gibson fashion, they are consumed by a ruthless killing machine, that in its ritual inhumanity has extended itself to the point of ruin. The timing release of this film surely extends to a warning against our own consumerist society, how we have treated tribes such as the Indians in the past, and how even we may yet face our collective doom as a society, but that's the extent of the plot. After the first 40 minutes of travelling to the Mayan capital, the film swandives into a take-no-prisoners, sadistic thrill ride that pulls zero punches, rarely extending into implausibility whilst it dares you to connect with a character who continually faces a kind of ritualistic trial of fear. If you can stomach the savage ritual torture scenes, you'll be taken on a trip to a place we're barely a millennium past. That this film was made by the same 'Mad Mel' who played Riggs comes as no surprise to those who think about this film with the first Lethal Weapon, and Mel's bug-eyed deranged acting there, in mind. Recommended highly.
A disturbing look at the darkest parts of the human heart. I have been desensitized to violence in movies, but I could barely watch the whole thing. The most horrible thing about this movie is that you realize there was a whole society that revolved around a human sacrificial religion. Truly terrifying.
I saw this movie when the year it came out. My father bought a bootleg version in Mexico and I saw it like 5 times. I recently saw The revenant by Iñarritú and the concept reminded me of this movie.
Stunning pictures, and some awesome action scenes makes it worth watching. It's not amazing, but it's good. I didnt like much of the make-up job, tho. Thought some of it was revealed as sloppy in some of the MANY face close-ups. But again, worth watching.
The movie looks very good, there's a fantastic shot involving a spydercam that deserves to be watched again and again, and it has a nice pace. The plot is very simple but not so original.
