Despite the insane reception on release, its not much more than pure entertainment. That said, it is VERY entertaining.

A British alien invasion/horror movie set in a Council Estate, with a gang of teenage toughs taking on fierce alien monsters while, presumably, Torchwood is behind the scenes wondering why the creatures are attacking a specific block in South London. (And there IS a reason, I don't mean to make it sound like the premise is unduly absurd.) Strong action beats, intense monster and gore effects, plenty of comedy, cool hip-hop beats, and even a bit of a social message that carries over to whatever ghetto you care to name... Once you get a handle on the thick accents, bruv, you're in for a good time.

I loved the political subtext, the soundtrack and the originality/accuracy of the characters. My partner's from south London and says that's exactly the sort of guys they used to hang out with when they were younger haha. So goood

Really slick, fun, cool take on the alien invasion genre. I loved the creature design, the references to the classics, the brisk pace, and the stylistic flourishes, but like a lot of people found the moral of the story and the ending highly questionable.

I'm going to repeat a common complaint, so apologies for the broken record, but as great as it is that a small budget British sci-fi with big ambitions was such a big success there are serious issues with the morality of the story. Like most, I found the gang of muggers loathsome, hopeless characters and was looking forward to watching Moses being chewed up and shat out by space beasts (oddly uninteresting beasts at that) and not celebrated as a hero at the film's conclusion. The mostly unknown cast are mostly great but the script and standard plot let them down. I read that Joe Cornish wrote the film to vent some frustration at having been mugged himself - but turning his attackers into noble warriors, admired and emulated by local kids, and basically bigging up gang culture was a stupid thing to do. Tru dat.

fun movie, good idea.
didn't like the mentality of the protagonists and the excuses they used to justify it ( south london social issues don't justify robbing girls) so I had a big trouble with sympathizing with them.

Southies! A bit rough for non-Brits since we can't really relate to these weird people, but still amusing in a way, similar to the pikeys of 'Snatch'. Once the movie has gotten it out of its system though, they start talking in a more proper manner, reinforcing the theory that Southies behave that way on purpose.
The movie works well on many levels and the effects are well done.
IMDb lists the movie as Action/Comedy/Sci-Fi and to be honest, as a non-Brit myself, I don't think I laughed even once. A few chuckles maybe.
Still, very well worth watching!

Very loud movie, a lot of swearing and irrational behaviour. The Aliens remind me of the classic videogame 'Another World' ... a lot!

A wholly underrated film, it should have got the kind of exposure Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead, Super 8 received, because it is every bit as good. For the first three quarters of the film not one scenario ended as I expected - I was kept guessing the whole way along. It also managed to be funny while maintaining a high level of suspense, which is no mean feat. Can appreciate that this would not be appealing to those non British/under 30 though
