I disagree, some movies do not need twists to be great. I don't get this obsession with twists. This is a great thriller with a simple story and an amazing, unexpected finale.
Definitely owes a debt to "The Vanishing", but only as a starting point, and although it's never as ingenious or as frightening as that film (this is the original I'm talking about not the shitty remake) "Breakdown" is solidly entertaining, extremely well acted by Russell, Quinlan and Walsh and possibly one of the best thrillers of the 90s - certainly one of the most overlooked. Give it a shot.
