Advice to those who haven't seen it:
1. watch it with subtitles
2. focus!
This is an original movie and I'm really happy to have seen it. Wouldn't take anything away nor would I add anything. JGL is amazing and a fantastic choice for Brendan. It's him where the "noirness" comes through: ballsy, intelligent, not afraid to tackle a stronger opponent... Loved how he wore the same clothes over and over again. Really great character.
I feel relief after reading other comments complaining about the abuse of slang in the dialogues; i had some problems following to what was happening because the slang and the fact that i'm not a native english speaker, but now i see it was a common problem.
I knew nothing about the film when I first watched it, and I liked it a lot, especially for the originality and seamlessness of the plot. It is probably best known for the film noir style it embraces. It may come off as hard to follow or empty to those not used to the genre.
I disagree with badfluffy. i thought there was a noir feel to it. the silhouette shots, the way joseph gordon levitt delivered his lines, the story (crime), the scene when jgl's character is in the pin's basement and finds the brick for the first time and he used the mirror as a source of light. the cinematography in that scene was very reminiscent of film noir. the genre was "neo noir," so it's going to be a little different and more modern taken on what is traditionally thought of as noir. i really enjoyed this movie.
Film noir in a contemporary high school setting. Not the most convincing but definitely riveting.
The language is a tad archaic and definitely doesn't match the style of dress (except maybe Laura's).
The setting may have been chosen so that the plot can stay relatively simple. But that high school was really classy.
Liked the movie, liked the idea, don't know if I needed the dialogue to be as yanked out of the past as it was. The line deliveries let me know this was a film noir, the slang that nobody uses pushed it a little too far for my taste. Solid movie, definitely worth seeing, and I'll be giving Looper a chance, but this won't enter my canon.
No, it really is stupid since it's as realistic as when 30+ year olds are playing roles as high school students. That's the same thing as this, just in reverse.
It's good for what it's trying to do but it's way to easy to overthink it and not be able to enjoy it, since everything is just wrong. It's the equivalent of Terror of Tiny town but pretending it's a normal western, even though the actors are different.
Great movie, with noir senses. Levitt is incredibly great, the dialogues of this movie are very smart. The movie doesn't stop, which is very nice to keep you looking at the screen all the time.
Not sure I understood the movie 100%, but there's just something about it that's really good.
Besides ofc, the great cinematography, lighting and amazing sound editing!

Very suprising. Really liked the script and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an excellent actor.deadendjob
The opening shot was excellent, and the film had some good scenes, but overall I felt there was a hefty amount lacking. 7/10LarsC
Good movie. I really like the film noir style story. Some costumes were a bit over the top though.Oriana
