everybody knows the odessa steps and they are (rightfully) considered one of the most iconic and important scenes of film history.what i want to mention is the culmination and especially the use of music to build the tension. simply marvelous film-making!

Sergei Eisenstein's birthday was this week, so it felt right to finally watch Battleship Potemkin (I'd seen The Strike in film history class at university), a surprisingly high-end production, with hundreds if not thousands of extras, use of actual battleships, and that famous, oft-quoted show-stopper on the Odessa Steps with the baby carriage rolling down. Set in 1905, this page of the Bolshevik Revolution presents a mutiny, as downtrodden mariners rebel against corrupt officers. Sympathy for their cause inspires a movement on dry land. Of course it's propaganda (ordered by Lenin himself on the 20th Anniversary of the Revolution), but it's Eisenstein, so it's regardless a masterclass in editing. How he cuts for action, building tension, and metaphor is incredible, and that comes hand in hand with the crafting of the shots themselves. Pretty brilliant cinematography as well. I didn't find it as shocking as The Strike, and the ending was a little limp as propaganda took over from story telling, but nevertheless, one of the greatest films of the silent era.Ressa
Beautifully filmed and directed for its time. Eisenstein knew what he was doing. Propaganda at its best. You can only imagine the influence of such a wellmade piece at the time, in the post-revolution years. Good (silent era)acting, experimental and revolutionary in terms of camerawork, editing and scenery. A silent masterpiece.Cassiodoro

Iconic and intense, a true definition of the power of film.hyvaa
This film is considered as one of the best film according to authorities. It is ordered by Lenin to young(27) director Eisenstein. The most interesting thing i noticed about this film is that the acting is very natural, not like the other silent films with exaggerated acting.

Many films pay homage to the Odessa Steps scene, including Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, Tibor Takacs' Deathline, Laurel and Hardy's The Music Box, George Lucas's Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Chandrashekhar Narvekar's Hindi film Tezaab, Shukō Murase's anime Ergo Proxy and Peter Sellers' The Magic Christian. Several films spoof it, including Woody Allen's Bananas and Love and Death, Australia, Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker's Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final InsultKuroSawWhat
That finale had me on the literal edge of my seat! Exciting stuff!Earring72

Incredible. A fantastic, amazing movie that must be seen by all lovers of cinema. One of the five best films ever made, on the ranks with Citizen Kane, The Godfather and The Seven Samurai.guitarmas5
