I enjoyed it. There's a real descent into madness, and the acting was excellent.

I'm surprised to see all the hate on this in the comments, but I can see how if you came to it expecting a horror genre film, this would have been really disappointed. I liked it a lot though--great performances, great dialogue, and increasing freakiness from Shannon.

This movie is definitely different. I'm one of those that actually like it, it's interesting, odd as it is.

All these negative comments are from GOVERNMENT AGENTS trying to hide the TRUTH that this movie reveals and that the Bilderberg Group and the NEW WORLD ORDER don't want you to know!!!!

Very good movie. It's obviously an adapted stage play, and I think Friedkin's and Letts' later collaboration on "Killer Joe" is superior, but the dialogue and performances from Judd and Shannon are excellent, and the film does a good job of producing an atmosphere of paranoia and insanity.

I'm not sure what the "secret" is that the poster below me is referrring to: spoiler

If you enjoy this movie, then I would recommend "Martha Marcy May Marlene", which has a similar dialogue-driven atmosphere of paranoia.

A progressively more claustrophobic descent into madness, I never considered that Bug started life as a stage play because of the strange horror elements. Theater can and has done genre, it's just not a ready association. Ashley Judd plays a woman in a difficult situation - living in a motel "suite", her ex-husband is just out of jail, a dark secret on her conscience, and a bit of a substance abuse problem - though things seem to turn around thanks to a chance meeting with Michael Shannon's character, an enigmatic young veteran who sees the world from an unusual angle and sparks fly. Then they start seeing/imagining "bugs" in the room and paranoia sets in. A paranoia that frighteningly seems less unbelievably extreme today than it probably did in 2006. Judd has a great speech at one point that exemplifies the sort of conspiracy thinking that's derailing society even as I write these words. And if it's all psychological horror rather than anything outwardly sinister, does it explain everything? The audience is left wondering...

Fantastic. I'd imagine it works better as a play... but what are you gonna do? Very enjoyable.

My friend lent this to me, saying "it's really good!", later to reveal to me that it was a joke. So I expected big things from this movie, and the movie showed promise of something bigger coming, only to shower me in disappointment.
The movie's biggest flaw, for me, is that it doesn't let you in on the "secret", serving the ultimate anti-climax at the end.

This is more of a comedy to me, more than anything else. Kind of like Napoleon Dynamite. Both are movies with retarded people that are fun to laugh at.
