Greengrass can create and maintain tension better than virtually any other current director, especially when he's working off real events. True to form, this is edge of your seat stuff from start to finish, even if you know the ending already. It's helped by brilliant performances from Hanks and all the other players, as well as a surprisingly nuanced script that presents both sides of the story without becoming overly preachy. The film would have been tighter if it was 15 minutes shorter, but it's a minor complaint when there isn't really a dull moment. If you can stomach the shaky cam then this is a must see.

Tom Hanks' performance in the last few minutes of the movie made the whole movie worth watching. I enjoyed the film, not saying it was amazing or even Oscar worthy. Yet, it was a great story, felt real, no over exaggerations for the action sequences (which I loved). Enjoyable, yes. Phenomenal and deserving a nomination for best picture? Debatable.

A HIJACKING was way better.

Some exaggerations aside (at last, this is not a factual report), Captain Phillips is as gripping as it gets. Keeps you chained to your seat for most of the time, doesn't take sides too much (I think) and keeps the cam just shaky enough you think you're afloat all the time - and a captive. Quite uncomfortable with a rock-solid Tom Hanks.

I also had to think of Zero Dark Thirty and enjoyed this more. Kudos, Mister Greengrass.

Very brutal, and tense flick.

It's 20 mins too long, but it's worth a look.

Though nominated for an Oscar, Captain Phillips is too much of a procedural, in my mind, for it to ever win. That doesn't mean it's a bad film, just not one as rich as other contenders. Paul Greengrass' newest thriller is based on the real story of a cargo ship attacked by Somali pirates, the taking of its captain (Tom Hank) as a hostage, and subsequent rescue efforts by armed forces. It's not the kind of thing with subplots, though its worth is in spending as much time in the pirates' head space as it does in the sailors, and a real commitment to authenticity, using actual Somali actors and non-actors in minor military roles, doing the action for real and not with visual effects, and so on. (Not to say there aren't differences with the real events, or some invention by Greengrass, because there are.) A gritty, documentary-style, impeccably edited, suspenseful and yet unromantic (that's a feature, not a flaw) film that's more about team work than the title seems to imply.

A navy procedural and thriller held together with great performances and a near perfect script. The downside of these true stories is that we all know how it ends. There's nothing bad to say about this film, it just didn't engage me as much as other films nominated for Best Picture. Still damn good though.

"Captain Phillips" is a decent, entertaining and well-shot movie. Not outstanding, but watchable. A reversed David and Goliat story, where the good Goliat(USA) draw the longest straw. Classic(some might say cliché) propaganda viewing of US as the greatest nation known to man, but not as visual, as feared. As far as I know, Greengrass are quiet true to the real events, even though there are so many layers of the whole pirate problem that aren't taken into consideration.
Hanks best performance in many years even though he still is Hollywoods poster boy. Great to see him out of the dull, predictable Langdon- like roles.

Tom Hanks seems to be on his way to the GoldenGlobes and AcademyAwards once more, amazing performance! Especially the last 15 minutes made me feel things I don't feel in movies that much. If Argo was the best of 2012, this is Argo times ten!

I heard this was Greengrass' best film yet and I hold The Bourne Ultimatum in the highest regard but wow, I think I preferred this.

Yeah....nah. Really wanted to like this but it felt too long and too drawn out for my liking. Sure, an awesome performance by Tom Hanks, but that doesn't make the movie.
