The musical score is haunting and bittersweet. The idea of accepting spousal abuse so easily in the movie could be a turn-off to some. But that is the way it was back then. Thank God, our views on this have changed and we no longer tolerate it. Still, it gives the wife in the movie just one more aspect to the long-suffering but loving wife. Great movie!
One of Rogers & Hammerstein's most beloved scores, and presented beautifully. It was overlooked at the time due to poor box office, and it's hard to see it gaining a new audience. Modern sensibilities make the film's blase treatment of spousal abuse unpleasant.
