Thank god for Bourne films which persuaded Wilson/Broccoli to turn to a more serious tone. When watching the parkour scenes or the emotional depth in general in Casino Royale it's hard to imagine that just 4 years ago we had Bond fucking windsurfing in shitty CGI Iceland.
When Daniel Craig was announced as the next Bond you could hear many collective groans from much of the fanbase. Fortunately the character was in good hands with Martin Campbell (who also directed Brosnan's first outing, Goldeneye). The action sequences are great, the classic high-stakes poker playing is fantastic, and Craig manages to bring a cold-hearted presence to the role while also showing how broken Bond is inside. Many hate the lack of gadgets but honestly I think a lot of the usual toys would have taken away from the seriousness of the film.
The opening of the film in stark black and white Noir is chillingly good. Without doubt one of the best ways to introduce a new Bond. In that first three minutes and change the main character is given a proper introduction, perhaps the epitome of "show, don't tell" storytelling. You know you're on the right track when the opening scenes of the film are already more interesting and immersive than whole segments of Bond films we've seen in the past.

I watched Casino Royale again after some friends talked about its theme song, and then realized, hey, I've never given it a proper review. But at this point, you all know his name and you all know this film. I still consider it a high-water mark in the franchise, and I don't think I need to prove it. Instead, here are some random thoughts that went through my head as I was watching... Eva Green as Bond... These movies but when Bond calls M "m'am", he actually says "mum" (wouldn't really change anything, I don't think). Casino Royale but LeChiffre is running a high-stakes version of the nerdy French game show "Des chiffres et des lettres" (Numbers and Letters). "Le compte des Bond" (sorry, this comment is for a very narrow audience)... The guy who touches his ear (you know the one) is Maria's dad from The Sarah Jane Adventures! (Ditto)... And who doesn't love the fact that Daniel Craig has a "coming out of the water" scene normally reserved for the Bond girl (from Ursula Andres on up)? From the black and white opener to the last line, this is a good 'un.
I went from hating this movie to liking it very much.
If you scroll down you'll see my comment from 4 years ago when I watched this movie for the first time. Back then I was very disappointed because my whole knowledge about Bond was from the book which I liked. I expected the film to be something close to the source material since it was praised so much for being "more realistic than previous movies". In reality it's hardly more realistic movie and Craig's Bond is hardly a more developed character than any previous Bonds. But Casino Royale has a different style, it's subtle and well made.
The action looks unnatural and choreographed, Bond is a cold blooded killer, the plot doesn't follow book closely - these things bothered me a lot the first time (stupid, I know, but that's what happens when you read books before watching movies based on them) but I finally got over them.
What made me appreciate this movie mostly is seeing every previous Bond. Knowing what 007 movies are all about as well as the classical tropes and formulas of the films I finally understand what this movie does well and what it is praised for.
Overall, it's not my favorite 007 film (even Skyfall is better in my opinion), but it's very good and I'm glad I finally agree with the majority of Bond fans.
Like it! Nice action, good fun, great poker games, wonderful actors... I like Craig as James Bond and Mikkelsen was a great villain, Judi Dench was wonderful as always. I also hugely enjoyed the scenes in Venice and some other great location shots.

Terrific James Bond movie! Good story, great action, good villian and Graig makes an excellent rough and tough James Bond.Still holds up after more than 10 viewings. Blu Ray is terrific. One of the best James Bond movies ..period!
Hope they will bring back Martin Campell as director for the next one. Of all the recent Bond directors he handles drama, thrills and action the best.

Fave Bond film, and I've seen a lot of them! Loving Daniel Craig as the new Bond.Itsamulatto
@Kane ParsonsYou clearly have not seen Pierce Brosnan crucify James Bond's good name.
HE is easily the worst. Hands Down.

Daniel Craig was very good as the new bond. The banter between him and Eva Green was brilliant. Overall a good film.MathianSim
It fit. But I didn't like that this one's style carried over into QoS. Bond was supposed to be a rookie here. But not after this one.Scratch47
