This was such a weird, unexpectedly dark movie. I did not see that change in tone coming at all, not from trailers, not from how the movie was progressing. It has scenes that are emotionally uncomfortable to watch which makes them really great, because a movie that can make me have this type of a visceral emotional reaction to a scene is doing its job correctly.
I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to watch something off the beaten path.
Colossal is one of the most interesting giant monster movies you're likely to see because while kaiju and mecha indeed threaten the city of Seoul, the film is really an exploration of toxic relationships and how they either release our inner monsters, or else make us accept monstrousness in our lives. Anne Hathaway has a special connection to the lead kaiju in Colossal that might well make her take back control of her life (though I think her alcoholism is handled realistically and there are no easy movie outs), while Jason Sudeikis, playing her only lifeline when she goes back to her home town, may prove to be an illusory shelter. Director Nacho Vigalondo finds a way to move from comedy to weird sci-fi to dark drama effortlessly, and his images of toxicity, while not necessarily subtle, are on point and sensitive. A quirky gem. Don't want to say too much because part of its effectiveness is in its ability to surprise.
Could have been so much more in the hands of a better writer. The premise is amazing and it only gets half exploited while the rest of the movie is stuffed with bad comedy and unrealistic characters.
It's a plot that deserved more of a humanist take and less of an absurdist take.
Hathaway does brilliantly but Sudeikis is terribly miscast, which doesn't really help sell the second half of the movie when he's acting like a psycho.
Although it's very crazy and hard to evaluate seriously; "a quite original, fairly well-thought and somewhat surprising fantasy/thriller/drama which has a pretty funny first half" could be a confusing but accurate enough description for this one. It's not a very exciting and memorable movie but on the long run, it could become one of those little "weird" cult sci-fi/fantasy flicks that you remember once in a few years. Be advised to watch without any real expectations. 7/10.
6/10
To say the least, original ... and interesting. And unpredictable.
But what do they want to say with the film, what is the sense of morality? Watch the movie and think about it myself, I spoil if I say more!
Doubtful if I look at this again.
Is Anne Hathaway the least likable protagonist in a movie ever in this one? Thumbs up for an original idea, I would take it before a new Transformers movie every day a week and twice on sunday, but... this is not a good movie.
