A pandemic scenario played as a drama and a procedural. I found it rather disturbing because it seemed like something that could really happen, at least until the situation got too out of control and it starts feeling more like a movie. But by then, you're halfway through, so "it could happen here" becomes a question rather than a statement. I don't think I want to know the answer. Being a movie star won't help you survive the film (again, Soderbergh delivers on the all-star cast), probably why the jeopardy works so well. All I know is that I am probably the least alarmist person when it comes to health concerns, but this thing filled me with apprehension. Brr.
The movie is very good. It's not that "cheesy american virus drama flick" I think the Director gave us almost a 'fiction-documentary' so we can have an idea how the government works and how people react. He showed various levels of society dealing with a new epidemic.
This is kind of hard for me to review. It totally worked for me, but I have no idea how.
There were so many parallel plots going on, so many characters - usually that's never too good for a movie; but here I never felt confused or distracted. I took interest in all of the stories and they somehow seemed to form a decent movie.
I also loved the actors - and though I initially thought that (due to the many subplots) they might not have time to actually deliver a good performance or make you relate to their characters, they did manage.
The different focuses of the storyline also managed to keep me attentive. I was curious to find out more about the nature of the virus and Gwyneth Paltrow's character but I was equally interested in many individual stories and also the general descent into savagery and chaos.
With all of this going on, I was also pretty impressed by how the movie still had time left to show somewhat complex characters. Not everything was merely black and white... there were many shades in between and also characters who were troubled or differentiated or weren't what they seemed... e.g. Laurence Fishburne's or Jude Law's characers.
So all in all, a movie that was quite entertaining, contained great performances and worked a lot better than I expected it to.
Really "enjoyed" this movie and by enjoyed I mean I was entertained to a degree that I am now aware whenever I touch my face.
They were telling a story that has an almost real life like scenario, something that could happen, they didn't aim for a fastpacing action movie... People who got bored by the movie just didn't get the subtleness of it.
Matt Damon was brilliant, as was Kate Winslet but I'd loved to see more of her.
Finally a star-filled film that is worth watching!
Soderbergh has something to say and I like how he's saying it. He has developed a nice style and I think this movie is not your typical hollywood film, no climax is needed, very nice soundtrack and excellent photography.
In my personal taste I think this movie is haunting and worth watching, except if you're interested in hollywood type films.
Quality movie, excellently put together. It's slow paced so if you're a fan of Transformers movies or Jason Statham then don't bother with it, it's not for you.
Was impressed that they didn't "hollywood" it and sacrifice realism for far fetched drama, though this point actually appears to be many people's criticism... oh well.
Beginning was strong, the rest mediocre. Cool soundtrack which reminded me of Social Network. Why they put so many big names in it, remains a mystery to me. 6.5/10

Intense movie from Steven Soderbergh.zchampeau
Could have and should have been a lot more. Just because a movie is topical does not mean it is award worthy.mook
A serious and plausible take on a virus pandemic. Good music, cast & atmosphere but unsettling rather than gripping. 7/10.Follow me on Twitter @LastFilm Seen
