Apparently written before Gremlins, but a comparison with that inventive spin on monster movies reveals the shortcomings of this one. It takes the Critters too long to arrive, and when they do the film is very limited in scope, with the Critters sticking to a single location and the chaos kept to a low level. It does have quite a few entertaining moments, there's a nice sense of small-town Americana and the Critters themselves are another brilliant creation of the Chiodo brothers, but overall it's a rather mediocre 80s monster movie.
