Sorry, I disagree with dantheman89, the disgusting nature of the film shouldn't be compared to the novel. This was a depraved and disturbed man, that existed among the dregs of society. The filth and disgusting nature of the film really brings out his world and takes you right through it.
The filth and disgust you feel watching every second of this film is unrivaled, truly an uncomfortable experience, but it is justified, unflinching and raw. The viewer actually steps into his cramped world and the lost people he constantly surrounds himself with.
The film accurately captures the sentiment of pure depraved alcoholism and its damage to people affected by it. From the state of his house to the lack of empathy of drunks seeing their friends kicked around, the disgust felt by most viewers is exactly what the film is trying to bring out.
For me i would say this is a 7.5/10 just for the hell it drags you through
*Sigh* - so yeah most of the criticism is justified. It's not as good/subtle/compassionate/clear as the novel, the violence and grossness is partially too much and the "dark humor" mostly doesn't work either. Comparison with "Henry: portrait of a serial killer" are gonna be unfavorable.
Is it as bad as a most of the reviews made it sound? Not quite. It does show a world that you usually don't get to see and people you wouldn't think existed/exist in (or outside of) society.
If you are a gore-hound/horror fan - this is the wrong movie. If you enjoy stage-plays that make you scratch your head - give it a go.
to see which of your friends have seen this movie!
