This four-part mini-series gives an outstanding insight into real hardcore detective work. Instead of making this a flashy 1.5-hour story, it takes it time to let the people involved recount their perspective. As a result, episode 1 fails to be gripping, potentially causing many to not move on to the next episodes, which become increasingly captivating. It's absolutely worthwhile. The plot of this true story becomes pretty crazy. In a nutshell:
The police was unable to resolve the 1989 disappearance of Birgit Meier. Interestingly, her brother was a high-ranked police chief, heading the State Criminal Police Office in Hamburg (his sister's case fell under the jurisdiction of another state). After he retired in 2002, he put together an interdisciplinary team to privately solve the case, which took them 15 years. Due to the police not committing themselves enough, they had missed or ignored numerous red flags regarding the perpetrator; a sexual predator and mass murderer that managed to stay under the radar for years, and who might have been involved in many more unresolved murder cases across Germany.
