2d characters. The songs makes it watcheble. Things get a bit better in the second half. Not bad, just not good. I did make we want to learn a bit about Motown and the rest of the not so used potential of the inspiration behind the setting, so that's something.
I do like some musical movies but I did not like this one. Hard to tell why... somehow I could not connect to the characters at all. Some roles like e.g. Eddie Murphy's were extremely annoying to me. I like Beyonce Knowles very much as a singer but even that could not save the movie for me.
The vocal performances were good, of course. Great voices. But even this part I could not completely enjoy as some particularly passionate or dramatic songs were also particularly annoying to me. Which is strange, because normally I love passion in such songs and it can hardly be too loud or too ardent for me... but this production just did not meet my taste.

As others have said there is just something off with this movie.Eddie Murphy is completely miscast, he basically just plays himself rather than James Brown.
Beyoncé's acting isn't great. She just pretends to be a ditzy cute girl. And whilst I love her as a singer she doesn't even attempt to sing in a motown manner, she just plain old sings like she does nowadays.
Hudson did not deserve to win an Oscar for this performance. I think politics played a part in this win.
Foxx wasn't great. Nowhere near deceiving enough.
Glover was about the only actor in this that hit the role perfectly.
