This film was entirely improvised. There was no script, and the only things the actors and the crew had was a vague outline of the order of events that the director wanted to happen.

The ~6 IMDb rating is a real shame, I thought this was a great movie. Everything has a very organic and realistic feel to it, especially the dialogue, which is unsurprising given that it was entirely improvised. All the actors involved give fantastic performances, with Olivia Wilde probably at a career best here, but the standout is Jake Johnson, who is phenomenal as Luke. It's a simple and low-key story well told, and you could do a lot worse if you're looking for a relaxing comedy/drama that steers well clear of clichés (apart perhaps from the initial premise) and opts for substance rather than style.

Drinking Buddies is a drama about relationships where each scene is completely improvised. Naturally, I'm interested. What the quartet of actors successfully achieve, within the director's loose framework, is well-judged realism. They follow the interpersonal chemistry where it leads them, have reactions we recognize as real, and both respond or ignore cues according to their characters' level of cluelessness. The big winner in the cast, for me, is Anna Kendrick, who most seems like a real person, someone not in a movie. The plot is simple, but doesn't follow formula, and is essentially triggered when two brewery employees bring their significant others to a cabin in the woods and sparks fly in the wrong direction. From there, cinematic expectations become less important than actual human behavior, which makes the film worthy of note.

In a movie theatre I would hate to see a movie like that, but when it comes from TV I don't mind at all. It's a good movie.

I was totally stoked for this movie after finding out the whole film was improvised, but was very disappointed at the end product.

There was no build up in between scenes, resulting in me questioning the logic of the two couples were split in such a painfully obvious way.

I applaud them for trying to step outside the box so to speak; they were successful in portraying real life conversations and interactions. Unfortunately they failed to realize that real life is pretty damn boring.

i'm clearly not a fan of the genre. I thought it was a good movie, but ultimately a bit pointless, like just following a few people through their daily lives... There's no real ending to it, which is a shame, because i kept wanting it to go somewhere, but it never really did, which gave me a feeling it was a waste of time. Not a lot of funny parts, so it's not really a comedy like Wikipedia said. Maybe it doesn't really fit anywhere. The whole improvisation thing worked out fine, but there wasn't enough story to make it more than an OK movie.

Like the differences between Wine and Beer, the film perfectly captures the differences between extroverts and introverts and how that all ties in when being in a relationship. It was only after watching the film did I realise it was entirely improvised - considering how brilliantly and sophisticated the subtext really shines through does it prove to be an amazing job on director Joe Swanberg's part.

Surprisingly affecting and really well directed film. The description 'improvised relationship drama set amongst workers at a microbrewery' won't help it escape the unfair 'mumblecore' label it's already been slapped with, but this quiet and unassuming film is one of the year's finest.

This movie is pretty good.
Olivia Wilde is great in the acting such as Anna Kendrick.
Is not that funny like other romace/comedy movies that I´ve have seen but is so much better that the horrible movie Take This Waltz, the story is different but there are close enough to compare one and other.
