Some of the footage is a little older, but as it is hard to acquire, understandable.
The narration is better than I expected. There were very few (but some) statements that seemed invalid, irrelevant or far-fetched. This is quite rare in a documentary of this type: one that exposes problems or an issue.
I have been planning to watch this for almost a year, and I have been postponing it over and over again. Being familiar with similar footage from PETA and other organizations, I knew what to expect, and I knew it would not be a pleasant experience. I finally watched it and I was very glad when it was over. I will never watch it again, but I think every person should watch it at least once. Or watch parts of it, like the first 30-45 minutes.
Although some scenes in the movie are not representative of every day routines, most of the well known methods of slaughter are depicted in the movie and are by no means exceptions. Furthermore, the methods of handling the animals before the actual slaughter, although illegal in some western countries, can not be effectively supervised and prevented by government law enforcement institutions. Especially when only a few people are involved at the actual scene. It still happens all the time.
Even if the average animal in the food, entertainment or clothing industry would only suffer 0,01% as much as the ones in this movie, it is still way beyond all common values and ethics.
Animal rights is an important topic, but I was disappointed in this movie given its high rating. Disturbing imagery requires more context, focus, and finesse. This was not a balanced or deep look into how animals are or should be used for food and research. Nor was it at least edu-taining like The Cove.
Edit: It's definitely worth it to keep watching - and not just for the chipmunk fight at the end. Not the best documentary. However, I'd recommend it to anyone because of the important and often ignored topic.
for people who have never realized this stuff before, it might be tough to watch. however, if you have any idea what is going on in this world, you probably have some idea about this kind of stuff already. personally i found that most of the people in this "documentary" that were inflicting harm on animals (which i do not advocate) seemed to be either lower intelligence or had hate issues already in their own hearts. i believe that the actual "problem" here goes much deeper than this movie could ever touch on.
Nobody should be in favor of propaganda, just because they agree with it. People should be in favor of unbiased truths that are willing to show both sides of an issue, even if it's not a truth they agree with.
If you want to see a dog get its entire skin ripped off its body like a shirt while its still alive, and then have nightmares about it for the rest of your life, then this is the movie for you.
this made me realize how many animals I was murdering all the time. watched 20 minutes, paused it, never resumed it and never again I ate meat, milk, egg, honey or any other shit that kills animals to feed our egoistic selves. go vegan yall
- guess I'll never be able to check this doc, since watching it makes me sick and I cry until there are so many tears I'm drowning like alice
Very tough and moving - in a good way in my oppinion.
Though the word 'propaganda' usually has negative connotations, I do not think that propaganda furthering morally good causes is bad. I agree with JohnPrice calling this film propaganda, but I believe it is propaganda for a justified cause.
