The film is still seen today as one of the most important Colombian films. The atmosphere Luzard created is perhaps its greatest achievement, and contributing to this was the work of Brazilian cinematographer Hélio Silva, who had shot Nelson Pereira dos Santos’ Rio 40 Graus (1955). Despite the makeshift laboratory set up to process the film, the images reveal a purity and expressivity which contrast with the murky sound and uneven acting. The film did not manage to attract large audiences, however: only 20,000 spectators went to its initial release. But it later became somewhat of a cult film and is a perennial component of Colombian film retrospectives abroad. Its portrait of the country and the people who inhabit it remains true today. -Diego Rojas 8 years 5 months ago
