Apart from the Farewell to Arms joke I thought this was just atrocious. I loved the first one, but this is caught between sequel and remake and just suffers a continual identity crisis. The story varies from just lazy to ridiculously far-fetched, and the acting and dialogue is predictably bad. Some so bad its good moments, but nowhere near enough.
This was a terrible movie.
The original Evil Dead was okay, it was a bearable movie, not one of my favourites, but I can see why it's so popular.
This however, was really bad.
Bruce Campbell's acting (and most of the other actors too for that matter) was just comical. And I think that Sam Raimi was going for that exact feeling. However, it's comical in a bad way.
Better than the first but a few funny scenes doesn't make something as stupid as this one good. Some of the worst acting I have ever seen. I suppose it's so bad it's kinda decent and borderline entertaining but still. I'll never get how people like these film.
Having rewatched this, I can now firmly say that it's easily my least favorite of the three films. It messes with the continuity of the series for no real apparent reason, it's just all over the place (laden with random special effects scenes to showcase the higher budget) and none of the scary or funny scenes really work for me either.
Army of Darkness is hilarious and The Evil Dead is genuinely creepy at times - Evil Dead II just kinda sways between the two without finding a proper balance, and I disagree that it's the "perfect mix" of horror and comedy. Still a neat movie though.
They held back on The Evil Dead's beautiful gore to give us gallons of unimpressive green, blue & black "blood"
The film fucked up the original's dark & foggy tone with a flood of garish effects & goofy slapstick.
Ash was turned from an inept but unwavering hero in the first, into a nut case you laughed at a crude pixar lamp.
& all the other actors/characters pissed me off every time I saw them.
The only great scene was the GROOVY, scene, which in it's own was epic.
The Evil Dead is a movie I whole heartedly adore because of it's atmosphere, scares & gore. Evil Dead II failed because it strayed from those ideas to try & win us over with attempts at comedy, personal conflict & FX.
Am I the only one who didn't like it that much? Not great but not terrible. Weird plot. A bit dull. Good effects though. The last 3rd was a bit better. Ending quite cool. Give it 3.6 of 5.
Huge step up from the first. Bruce Campbell gives a fantastically unique performance and the script, horror, humor and feel all work together to make something really groovy.

What a disgrace of a sequel to a classic. They held back on The Evil Dead's beautiful gore to give us gallons of unimpressive green, blue & black "blood"
