This is a very different movie from the original. While the first was a landmark event for the dark humor indie film. This film is just another addiction to Cabin in the Woods canon. However, it is a very well crafted addition to that genre. It takes itself more seriously, so it lack much of the campy charm of the original, but it makes up in plot and character development that the original glazes over. The film is sickly violent and never lets go of it's audience. If your a fan of a movie that rains blood (literally) you will not be disappointed. Its not an intelligent film but it never tries to be, it knows what it is trying to accomplish and it succeeds in strides.
I understand why people were disappointed, but not being a hardcore horror fan I though it was frightening and gross with enough plot to make it worth while.
Fans need to settle. This was a well-crafted horror film, filled with brilliant and practical effects. The script, while not perfect, gave us fairly well-realized characters and a strong backbone for what we all came to see--straight up savage horror. It even got a little campy, which is exactly what I want from a gorefest.
If anyone thinks this is a disgrace to the original, please, watch the original. It's a great little B horror movie, but it is not untouchable. This is a worthy followup.
"The most terrifying film you will ever experience..." ha ha ha... No.
Interestingly, for a film that seems to have a problem with women (as they are the subject of the majority of the violence and source of much of the fear) there's a moment in the final reel when the film theoretically passes the Bechdel test as two characters have a brief exchange about souls... before one of them gets a chainsaw in the face.
Not on the level of the original but still a thoroughly entertaining film!
So much better than the horror crap that has come out so far this year, Dark Skies, Mama, etc.
For the first half of this movie, I like it quite a lot more than the original. The premise and content of both films lends itself well to making a pretty serious movie. Additional elements in the remake add to this, giving it a lot more depth.
Unfortunately, at least the way this particular rendition was put together, it couldn't hold interest for the full runtime. By the last third or so I was really wishing I was watching the original again, just so that at least something interesting would be happening.
In the end, that was enough to place it firmly below the original version. But probably still worth watching for an alternative take.
Passable with frustrating flashes of brilliance. I posted a much longer breakdown but my browser crashed. Bog off Firefox. In short, this was a just-above-average modern studio slasher with the cocktease of potential excellence lurking just beneath the surface. None of the chilling atmosphere, black comedy, or intensity and pace of it's progenitor - it just ...sat there. The demons were just bog-standard cultural puppetry. Raise the bar and push everything to 11 next time - camera angles, sound design, music, psychological impact - people aren't going to react to horror these days unless you hit em round the face and leave them questioning their bladders in terror. This though? It doesn't warrant the comparisons it tries to draw to the classic trilogy. Good acting from Jane Levy, buckets of blood and gore, good use of colour and a few interesting moments, but honestly, that's about it. I expected more, really.

Little disappointed.. Just a lot of blood, not scary at all.Ralf
Unless I'm mistaken, around 6600 gallons of fake blood was used to make the movie.
Some behind-the-scenes footage can be viewed here.

Hated it. It's like it took every crappy cliche from every horror movie made of the past 6 years and crammed it into this giant borefest.Scratch47
