proof that the academy nominates movies their kids watched at chrismas time for the animation category.
its not terrible but its nothing to gush about. John Cena is surprisingly good as the lead in this one. And the third act makes me forgive how forgettable the first 2 acts are. But its mostly kids fluff and bright colours.
I was surprised to see Ferdinand get an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature because it looked solely for children and not for families like the Academy usually honors. But I went and saw it anyway.
And it really is just for kids. There's a lot of cheap jokes, but there's also a lot of good stuff that happens when the focus shifts away from making the kids laugh. The growing-up sequence set to Nick Jonas' "Home" was fun and heartwarming, and there are some really entertaining comic-relief characters. Although some of those are hit-or-miss.
The story beats are somewhat predictable except for a couple surprises, and a really nice ending that kind of brought tears to my eyes. The film overall had nowhere near the charm and emotional heft that Coco did, but you really can't compare Pixar and Blue Sky.
All in all, I was pleasantly surprised and had fun with Ferdinand.

I was really surprised by how good this movie turned out to be. I loved the message, the visuals, and, of course, the main characters. This movie is genuinely better than Coco which came out the same year.
Check it out! ^_^

This includes a scene of our bulls having a dance off against mock-german-accent horsies on the other side of a fence.baraka92
