I can't remember ever seeing a spectacular middle-age themed movie but this one wasn't too bad. The action more or less makes up for the cheesiness that pervades pretty much everything else. The costumes and sets were a particular highlight.
There were a lot of cheesy movies made in the 90's. Plenty of them make for fine if shallow entertainment. This one had all the pieces: a contrived love story, a few competently executed action scenes, hammy, over-the-top acting. It just wasn't a good execution of those things. This is a tiny nitpick but at one point one of Arthur's knights asks for "2 battalions" to carry out some mission. Arthur says its too many men and will draw suspicion. "Take one brigade, now." A brigade is about three or four times the size of a battalion. Just little bits of laziness like that add up and make you feel that no one put much effort into this film.
