Feels like a Baz Luhrmann film as directed by Scorsese.

Beautifully mounted film, but soon sinks under the weight of cliches. Day-Lewis is fantastic, but unfortunately for the film, much more interesting and likeable than Di Caprio and his band of stereotypes.
The film also has very little in the way of historical accuracy or period-appropriate attitudes.

A very interesting time the movie brings, but the story is too much hollywoodized, with as always terrible consequences to the movie.. a regular one..

I'm starting to think this Scorsese guy has a thing for New York City.

Diaz isn't the best for the role
But Leo and Lewis ARE
To a ridiculous degree
Not to mention Liam and the rest of the supporting cast
It's great, long, but great.
Just, ignore the overly-preachy ending

The Gangs of New York is a strange film indeed. We're used to westerns, and I suppose to urban films set in the same period among the middle or upper classes. Perhaps that's why the New York underworld of the mid-19th century feels so bizarre, although Scorsese does admit to having gone for a heightened, operatic feel. It's a mix of almost anal historical accuracy and fantasy opera, and the two styles don't sit well together. I think it's because we don't know enough about the setting going in. When you know something well, you can appreciate a stylized, exaggerated version of it. Here, even with the DVD extras to help you, it's very hard to grasp what's what, and the setting is fantastic enough that it probably didn't need the embellishments. If you imagine Scorsese's gangster films to exist in the same universe, then Gangs of New York is the precursor to them all.

Lewis was great, rest ok. Drama was ok, but final third of the movie feels rushed.

When Diaz met DiCaprio, I expected an explosion from the critical mass of bad acting. DiCaprio couldn't remember to hold his accent in place. (Day-Lewis wasn't great at it, either). Nice production design: the Five Points is credibly recreated. The ending did suck: even with a quasi-historical basis, deus ex machina is very bad form.

Ugh... pretty bad film. The supporting cast outshines the leads, DiCaprio and Diaz were miscast, shoddy editing...
