far inferior to cukor's version, despite walbrook's presence.
I was already familiar with Patrick Hamilton's original play, but I've not yet seen the better known remake from four years later; I'd would be surprised if it's as good as this- mainly thanks to Anton Walbrook's superbly nasty turn as the jewel hunting husband trying to drive his wife mad to protect himself from her unwittingly uncovering the truth about his criminal past. Diana Wynyard and Cathleen Cordell are both great as the weak willed and increasingly emotionally unstable Bella, and the joyfully lax-moralled parlour maid Nancy respectively. Because I knew the story it took away some of the pleasure of the plot unfolding, but regardless it's an excellently made thriller - quite shocking to read that MGM seriously attempted to destroy all copies of this version to enhance the reputation of the 1944 version. Luckily for us they failed.
