Brilliant Gangster movie. Michael Caine is sublime. The remake never even got in the same continent as this movie's coolness and badassery.
If the sum of your knowledge of the acting chops of Michael Caine is having seen him in "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," I beg you, PLEASE see this movie! You know that classic British wit that just oozes off of him in that and other comedic films of his? Well, imagine if that same cold, calculating stoicism was used in one of the best retribution-fueled movies of all time? He's got all the panache of an English lord and all the ruthlessness of a cold-blooded killer. The script is tense and terse, fitting in perfectly with the characterizations and the general mood of a gritty, depressed England in the early 1970s. Highly recommended!
Michael Caine stars as Jack Carter who returns to his hometown of Newcastle to investigate the death of his brother. Caine is Mr. Cool for about half the picture, then he discovers the truth and FLIPS OUT. It's an incredible performance. Director Mike Hodges uses the locations to give the thriller a lot of truth, while still doing a few arty things, including two of the best edited sex scenes I've ever seen.
