STYLE, STYLE, STYLE, and of course out of the box. I'm never disappointed with a Fellini movie. Breaks the rules as a true ARTIST does.

One of the most beautiful movies out there. Not the best movie, but as an art piece this shows pleasant scenes. You can watch this as if you are watching a Caravaggio.

Great and typical Fellini movie, with many bizarre characters, dressings and scenes.. First Fellini I don't favorite, but the plot must have been shocking for the audience that was living in the middle of the 60's sexual revolution.

At one time a female guest of Giulietta asks her lover whether he could pull her up so that she could grab something from the kitchen shelf and she said: "Romolo, tira mi sù!" It almost seemed as if Fellini invented that famous Italian dessert.

Fellini is a hard ask for me, even though I've generally liked the movies I've entirely sat through (but I know I've bailed on them in the past). It's plain to see Juliet of the Spirits is a very influential film, and I do see its fingerprints all over Argento, Lynch and Jodorowsky, but that doesn't mean it's easy to watch. It looks gorgeous, with vibrant colors (sometimes leaning into Giallo) and deep shadows (watch how unknowable men's faces are shot as blanks), and I do appreciate its story. Fellini muse Giulietta Masina is a vain but nice woman who believes her husband is cheating on her, and she seeks the help of various spirit guides to help her through the situation. These may be real or surreal visions, and even jobbers like the private detectives have philosophy to share. As the voices reach a crescendo, Giulietta (it's a little weird to think the character has the actress' name when she happens to be the director's wife) will complete her journey of self-realization and emancipation and come out the happier. I think her relationship with her judgmental mother is key - this is a woman who has defined her existence by what others think of her, and the "spirits" whether you think them real or hallucinatory, are just more people through which she is defined. I do quite like the idea of crowding Giulietta with voices in this context. But it also means the film is crowded, confusing and loud, a kind of pop-mystical picaresque to hear what various, and excuse me, strange people have to say about her situation. Masina is great, the movie is a bit indulgent though.

This is more comprehensible than 8½, but it's headed down the same path. The distracting potpourri renders the chivalrous premise an afterthought. And maybe that was intended, but it's not terribly relatable. The kind of thing you have to be in the mood for.

Pretty to look at. But I'm not fond of Fellini's movies; they are just a little too surreal for me.
