Super classic, with a wonderful cast taking it all seriously, which always makes for the best in scifi/horror flicks.

Surprisingly serious and gritty. In a good way.

The original and the best - not the Americanized version. In a non-ironic, not camp way, a really good movie. Effective and poignant.

honestly one of the best films period. Raymond Burrs version (and the bad sequels) just ruined its reputation

Very very somber and poignant. Liked it much better than most of the other Godzilla films I've seen.

A somber warning story about the dangers we pose to ourselves and the planet. Within that, a tragic love triangle that really shines on its own as well. You'll be hard-pressed to find human characters in any other Godzilla movie as engaging as Dr. Serizawa.

"It was probably something like leaving the theater when the train on the silver screen came towards you."

this is actually a myth.

There's a family story about this movie: when my late grandmother saw the movie in the theater she was so scared of the Godzilla that she had to leave the theater.
It's hard to imagine this simple fear nowadays. It was probably something like leaving the theater when the train on the silver screen came towards you. Today this simple fear is ruined by chainsaw massacres, paranormal activities etc.

It's almost like The Day The Earth Stood Still if it was made by a Japanese person. Friendly aliens? Bah, we need giant nuclear lizards in order to deliver our message!

I'm actually disappointed, for a strange reason. I was expecting more "rubber-costume silliness" and instead got a pretty serious movie. Might try watching it again in a different frame of mind.
