What you expect really. Pretty standard and average movie.

Only weird part was they chose fit looking actors to play gamers, one even had a six pack.

Could have at least had 1 that looked like an actual gamer.

I fully expected Gran Turismo to be a big fat ad for Playstation, but oof, that first half-hour... That's straight up Evangelical in its fervor. Despite being a true story, well-worn formulae are at the wheel for much of this (one suspects these elements are the Hollywood manipulations that never actually happened). Things settle down once we get into the racing, which is pretty strong - you do get caught up in it - even if Blomkamp can't quite decide what graphics to use to tell us where Jann (Archie Madekwe)'s pole position at any given point. Ultimately, this entertains based on its characters. Madekwe is endearing, but David Harbour is really the star here. He's as funny as he is tragic as the former racer, now chief engineer, and he gets all the best lines. Orlando Bloom's marketing guru is a jerk and needs to be balanced out. Everyone else is a cipher and hardly needs to be there, give or take the evil guy in the gold car.

Director Neill Blomkamp drives fast all the time, good job. David Harbour as trainer makes a memorable role. And all those Nissans of course...

Decent enough, I think the true story holds it.

At times rather simplistic and clichéd but saved by some decent acting and the race footage.

But oh my god does this movie feels like they used every bit of possible space to advertise the sponsors. I get the Nissan, Sony and Playstation logos but Puma is seen everywhere. Even when the dad is watching the race on the television he is clearly shown to wear Puma socks.

Basically a collection of sports movie clichés — unsupportive father, working-class background, sibling envy, gruff mentor figure with a troubled past (who eventually turns soft and forms a loving bond with his mentee), underdog defying the odds, guy gets the girl, etc. The “imaginary car” special effects might have impressed me when I was ten, but I just thought they were downright silly.
Overall, this film is a reasonably entertaining time-killer. David Harbour gives a particularly great performance.
