The use of technical nautical language and the rapid-fire script create a highly compelling contrast piece to the slow-moving, tense, claustrophic film, Das Boot. Had a similar tempo to Dunkirk.

Fast moving and tense WWII movie. The effects are sometimes a bit too much playstation, but the acting, story and details are great.

I enjoyed it immensely. Hanks does a great job of portraying the 'god fearing American battleship captain rookie extraordinaire'. As palefire writes, the language and script is excellent - and I felt the tension throughout the whole film.

Emotionally disconnected thriller. Hanks acting is great. Main reason to watch is that Hanks wrote the script. Extremely detail oriented dialogue. Overall, just ok.

Did anyone else go in thinking this was going to be about a bus driver?

It's like watching little Tommy Hanks play make believe by himself because non of the other characters matter. However I still managed to enjoy it like a mediocre John Wayne war movie.

Outstanding movie, but the movie is only what the movie is. As some commenters say, there's a lot of stuff (stuff that you often expect to be in good movies) that isn't in here, because it's not that kind of movie. It's great that we can have movies like this that don't limit themselves based on what people expect movies to be like.
