I liked the acting and some of the themes it tried to convey, but the screenplay is paper thin in places that should’ve been carefully developed to understand why the characters are acting the way they are. Also, being by the most middle-of-the-road director in the world doesn’t help. I doubt I’ll ever watch it again.

A "classic" American immigrant's story film returning to the the famously American narrative of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps". An idea much maligned these days and, as a result, we don't see too often anymore.

Critics and people have been pretty harsh on this film. It’s not perfect by any means, but I don’t think it’s a bad movie at all. It’s an every day person kind of movie for every day people. It does not fit the Academy best picture drama category, but it’s like the best On Cable movie you’ll watch. A good story, real characters going through real experiences. I enjoyed it, and I’ve seen A LOT of movies

Amy Adams gives a wonderful performance which is this movie's only saving grace (Glenn Close is great, too). Everything else is overly hokey.

Preachy, cynical, and schmaltzy trash.
