What would a giant robot anime be like if Shinkai did one? The action is solid, but like the rest of his work, it's really about what impressions the lead characters have, and like Your Name, uses science-fiction to create a distance between star-crossed lovers. There's a sense that this isn't really happening and stands as a metaphor for a real-life event - Evangelion is a probable influence - but it's just out of reach. Which fits the theme.

Impressive that this was done on a G4, though that gives a uniquely dated feel to the animation. It's like Neon Genesis Evangelion, except it's good.traistboar

Almost uniformly ugly animation (especially the 3D), and a lazy story with elements that can be found in much superior anime. If you want visual poetry and giant battle robots: Neon Genesis Evangelion.
If you want visual poetry and young romance: 5 Centimeters Per Second.
Another wistful sci-fi anime: The Place Promised in Our Early Days.
