Saccharine perhaps - terrible, inert and plodding definitely not. Melodramatic but in a positive sense. I quickly grew to care about these people and found this tearjerker far suprior to its modern equivelents.
A wonderful cast and beautiful direction from John Ford make this emotional story well worth watching, even if it is sometimes inclined to preach at its audience (especially in the character of Walter Pidgeon). Sentimental tragedy is not much in fashion these days, but it has a long history, and this picture represents a very fine example of the genre.
This is a beautiful film. It's one of my favorites!
