This film may be a bit long for it's ideas but it's quite beautiful. I think part of the reason so many people seem to dislike it is because they are expecting something that will scare them- not haunt them.
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House is a very solemn, dark, and depressing piece that brings many ideas to the table and is wonderfully shot.
It is quite slow and atmospheric, so if that isn't your cup of tea (haha) don't bother.
For me this movie didn't seem too long in the least, I was riveted from the very start.

What are the ghosts we make ourselves? I think that's what the very literate I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House explores. Ruth Wilson (from Luther) plays Lily, a jumpy live-in nurse just contracted to take care of an invalid horror writer in an old house with a possible secrets inside its walls. Lily's imagination goes into overdrive - about a patch of mold, about one of the woman's books - and one might say that Lily is, in fact, haunting herself. Oddity, isolation, fiction, anxiety, uneasiness... they all build towards the makings of a horror story, one that's cleverly recursive. With its florid narration and well-drawn, claustrophobic setting, the film is a triumph of atmosphere. The one thing I heard about Oz Perkins' first film, The Blackcoat's Daughter, was on the order of "What did we just watch?!". With this second effort, I think there's some of the same lingering mystery, but whatever WTF moment might be in there is earned and should make for a lively discussion afterwards.

Real garbage fest here. I can't quite give it 1 star, as it was shot well enough and acted with feeling but good lord, talk about stretching 30 minutes of content into 90 minutes. I'm all for slow, careful pacing in horror but this was just egregious.
