This might come off as a bit dull to fans of the original film. The elegance and suspense of the original isn't replaced by much of substance here good enough to justify a remake. For Miike, this movie is very... restrained. Honestly, that might not have been the right way to go. A better way to respect Kobayashi's film would've been to either A) not remake it, or B) distinguish the remake much more. I'd recommend watching the original Harakiri again over watching this rather forgettable iteration. 1 year ago -

Who would've thought that Takashi Miike was so sensitive? Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai is a beautiful film about love, family and the true meaning of honor. I think this is Miike's most mature and well directed film, though not as good as 13 Assassins or Audition. This is an actor's film and he firmly proves he can direct actors in sublime fashion outside the realm or glorified schlock. The finale is magnificently fashioned and meticulously photographed to capitalize on the slow build of the rest of the film. Just WOW. 10 years 11 months ago
