Great movie.
In a year with Doctor Dolittle and Cool Hand Luke they nominate Doctor Dolittle and not nominate Luke? WTF
The best actor in this movie is Sidney Poitier, the leading cop won best actor he had some good moments especially when he is on the screen with Poitier but beside that nothing special, Hoffman and Newman were a lot better.

It's a fascinating look into the undercurrent of racism that obviously flows beneath the surface of a small southern town. Taking place only 3 short years after the Civil Rights Act, the film draws a thick circle around the fact that law has little to do with changing people's long-seated emotions and biases. Poitier is at the top of his game as Mr. Tibbs, and Steiger is great as a Chief trying to walk a tightrope between the oath he took to seek justice and his own prejudices.

A simple yet captivating movie with a focus on characters and a slow pace. It never gets boring and it features one of the most brilliant Poitier role he did. The definition of a classic!

For years I thought I'd seen In the Heat of the Night and that it starred Carroll O'Connor in the role of police chief Gillespie, and of course, I did. In the Heat of the Night, the TV series. But O'Connor IS a bit of a dead ringer for Rod Steiger in this, isn't he? He would go on to help tell the story of Sparta, Mississippi for 8 seasons (I probably only caught parts of the first). Anyway, the MOVIE provides us with one of Sidney Poitier's iconic performances, opposite Steiger as the Philadelphia police detective they call Mister Tibbs, forced to help a racist town find a killer while indignities are piled upon him. The murder mystery works well, and Tibbs isn't above letting his own biases lead him down the wrong path, but it's mostly an acting showcase for the two leads. The tension between them is often unspoken, which put me in mind of the more recent Green Book in that sense, though it was much more transgressive in 1967, and it doesn't end on a cheesy, feel-good note. It's more realistic than that.

Straightforward, underrated, and still relevant. The intensity charges the film into brilliance however, filling the space between the lines with all the nasty subtext necessary. And yes, *that* slap.

Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger are amazing and work great of each other. But I think Rod Steiger plays a more complicated character, he wants to solve this case but is held back by what people think the sheriff should act like towards African-Americans. The film is very suspenseful and I was so afraid at the end when spoiler

They just don't make movies like that anymore. Tibbs and the Chief are two of the most fascinating characters I've seen in a while.
