Why IP Man and not YIP Man? Quotes from the IMDb forum.
Ip/Yip is the same, and it is the surname of the main character. The difference in spelling just depends on who did the pronunciation spelling.
A great example is that my mum's maiden surname is spelled Chau, but for her brother, it is spelled Chow, simply because they had different people doing their birth certificates.
"Man" in this context does not mean male, it is in fact just the phonetic/pronunciation spelling of his first name (so basically, his first name in Chinese sounds like the word 'Man')
And because us Chinese puts our surname in the front, that is why his name is seen as Ip Man, not Man Ip.
The real reason the movie drops the "Y" is b/c that is how both his sons have romanized their last name. They were spelling their names (Ip Chun, Ip Ching) and their father's name (Ip Man) that way since before the idea of any Yip Man biopic was ever conceived. Since Ip Chun was involved in the film, they spelled it the way he spelled his father's name.
Despite being a good film it's still a disappointment given it's ranked in the top 250 at the time I watched it. The choreography in the fight scenes is some of the best I've seen, but they're too few and the story inbetween is hackneyed and unoriginal.
I thought this movie was about a network administrator. :)
No seriously - really well done, the fighting is great and it feels like a different approuch to the history of China and Japan before and during the WWII. Just great! :)
This film was released the same year the martial arts list featured on this website was published, which is most likely the reason this film is not to be found on it. It would seem the list won't receive any (official) updates, which is a shame, considering some great martial arts films have been released since 2008, Ip Man included.
The fights are spectacular enough to make this movie great, despite a lot of over-the-top music scoring and drama. It's still a really compelling movie, though.
When a movie's hero is completely flawless and its villains are totally evil, it tends to be very boring. Fortunately, this movie has enough high-quality kung-fu to redeem it as a pure action flick.

Its IMDB score is too high. That aside, lovely fighting scenes.rvandam
Beware, the Ip Man currently available to stream on Hulu is a later knockoff/remake. Which I only realized after watching it :(Dan H

GREAT movie! Superb acting, design, and fights, but also really emotionally powerful, which made everything even more satisfying. See it!Showing items 1 – 15 of 51
