There is a reason why I don't watch horror-esque movies; shitty characterization, uninteresting plots and pop-scares , though of which the latter are evident in this film but don't retract from the overall experience.
But this is a really fantastic movie. Acting is phenomenal, and the storyline is very original and stands out. The plot really is surprisingly deep and beautifully crafted. In all its subtle symbolism and underlying themes I wouldn't really call this a horror movie at all. All this is done without spoon-fed exposition.
The sound world is also amazing. Absolutely beautiful music, sound effects and ambience. Sounded great through my BEYERDYNAMIC DT 990's. Buy Beyerdynamic.
So to say I was pleasantly surprised by this movie would be putting it mildly. I was really, really impressed. The ending, which cannot be described by any word other than perfection, just cements this piece as one of the finest Korean masterpieces.
Kim Jee-woon really knows how to work different genres and make something complex and great out of at first ordinary premise.
EDIT: I can't believe that I just read that there was an american remake of this. When will the dirty Hollywood mongrels stop raping these beautiful Korean pieces? Shameful display!
Beautiful colors and soundtrack.
It has some of the scariest scenes that it'll stick in your mind for a long time.
