A brilliant cast let down by an excess of backstory.

When Disney remakes The African Queen it would look something like this.

Just a simple adventure story turned into shallow fantasy (pun intended)

Silly fun, but could have done without the supernatural element. The evil German was more than enough villain for one film and the CGI villains felt too indebted to the Pirates films.

Throwing off some pretty strong 90s Mummy vibes at first, Jungle Cruise also has a lot in common with Pirates of the Caribbean and more pointedly, with Disney's animated movies. It's a cartoon in all but medium. It's all "acting for kids", bad puns, pee jokes, obvious music cues, slapstick, and caricatured villains... oh, and a CG animal sidekick. If this were an animated film, it would have worked fine. As live action, the boat is pitching at younger than I can set my brain (and how's that for a bad pun). But then, should we expect much depth from a movie based on a ride (and there are some fun references to it, I'm told)? The story takes adventurers played by some perfectly pleasant stars down the Amazon to find the Tree of Immortality (so it's The Fountain for kiddies), which is a pretty good "Indiana Jones" quest. The plot relies a bit heavily on narration at times, has one villain too many, and certainly forces the multiple happy endings, but the biggest question it leaves on the table for me is how this will be received by British children given that the Rock calls Emily Blunt "pants" through 90% of the picture.

Was looking forward to this movie but it fell a bit flat.

Was cheesy and naff throughtout and the plot was very lazy.

Oh let's just make Spaniards in America the villain again. Change the record guys. And Dwayne is supposed to be Spanish and yet doesn't even say one word in Spanish :D

Would have been a better movie if the led male was more of a young cheeky chappy, Dwayne just couldn't pull of the role.

Action was more what you'd expect in one of those 10 minute theme park movies than a proper movie.

Shame this film fell flat as it could have been soo much better.

So Johnson is Spanish but he can't pronounce correctly a single word in Spanish/Castillian. My god.

Fun action, good plot, funny and likeable. Maybe not an instant classic like the first Pirates movie, but still an enjoyable movie.

Dwayne Johnson is always charismatic and fun to watch but i felt like this particular character of his was too well written. Johnson always plays himself and I never felt like this was a real character even though it was written better than Johnson's usually part.
