I can agree with several other comments. The movie is way too long and it's so unnecessary as you could easily just watch the original King Kong for the same effect. I'd say this version is the most unnecessary of them all as it doesn't have anything new to offer unless you count all the things that happen on the island and before which is probably the most unnecessary parts of this movie.
The original is still the best, but this one is a good movie, that would've been better if they took off some 30 minutes from the Skull Island endless action sequences.
And no Carl, it wasn't beauty that killed the beast, it was you, you arrogant f*cker!
The film is a love letter to the original Kong and really made me want to see the original in its entirety more than anything. The movie is really three little films. I liked the mysterious boat ride a heck of a lot, and the last part, Kong's inevitable death, is touching even as an animatic. The middle part, however, is just one monster race/fight after another, and the extended edition simply adds an extra half hour of monster races and fights. Dull.
What a weird experience watching this movie... So many ridiculous and over the top scenes which really made me hate on it but for some reason it did make me a little emotional at the end (how that happened i have no idea...) and overall it was somewhat fun...
It doesn't even come close to the original but still it's not a bad remake.
Would have been great as a 2 hour movie. A real classic. As it stands it's too drawn out and there's too much shit that's not needed. How long does it take to land a fucking boat, for example? Just cut from the ship to the island--boom, done.
This is just Jackson being too far up his own ass. Elevating the genre is one thing, being pretentious about a B movie is another.
The studio should have just told him to edit it, but no I guess Jackson is just too epic right?
Also, making a direct comparison of his work to Heart of Darkness, that was the most ass sniffing thing they could do. Sorry but this is no Apocalypse Now. This is an above average schlock monster movie.
The ship sequence is probably the best part. The Skull Island stuff instantly takes all of that character building and just pisses it away, reminding you you're just watching King Kong again. It's naff and bad.

Worth a watch. I could've done with shorter creepy crawler scenes and the movie is wayyyy too long but pretty good. Naomi Watts is excellent in it :)Warrison

My favourite movie of 2005. Long to the point of almost swallowing itself, but I found the bloatedness...magnificent.baraka92
Long ago this was my favorite movie.lopan017
Good movie, but too long.KreedSTL
I felt it was a bit long. Maybe I'll rewatch it and see if 'not being at the theater' may give me a different perspective.shitmovies
