With the success of Krrish in 2006, it's not much of a surprise that Rakesh Roshan would want a follow-up. Add in the success of the Hollywood superhero movie market, there's a lot of opportunity to cash in on an Indian superhero that can take advantage of nationalistic pride. It's not like there hasn't been some blatant patriotism in some of the big Hollywood superhero movies anyway. Krrish 3 just makes a lot of business sense, despite the seven year gap.

Krrish 3 is actually the third film of a trilogy, the first being Koi... Mil Gaya which was more of a science fiction movie, heralded as the first in Bollywood. It's easy to write off as a straight up rip off of E.T. Krrish I actually don't remember a whole lot besides not like it all that much. Lucky for me, the film starts with a voice-overed montage of past events from Koi... Mil Gaya and Krrish so I suppose anyone could watch Krrish 3 without having seen the previous two movies.

Krishna Mehra (Hrithik Roshan) tries his best to balance his life between being married, caring for his father, working a steady job and being the masked superhero Krrish. His wife and father know of his superhero escapades but his professional life suffers a lot since Krrish is known for being at the right place at the right time to save the day. Meanwhile, physically handicapped evil businessman/scientist Kaal (Vivek Obero)who also has telekinetic powers releases a virus in Namibia that his company also happens to have the cure for, but waits until demand will drive up the price. Kaal aims to control the world with help from his genetically engineered mutant henchmen that will inevitably lead him to crossing paths with Krrish.

The story of Krrish 3 borrows heavily from other Hollywood superhero movies. Kaal is a mashup of Magneto and Professor X from X-Men except that he can manipulate anything, not just metal with his telekinesis. Elements of Superman and Spider-Man are sprinkled throughout as well as some inspiration from The Matrix. Krrish 3 is incredibly unoriginal and the story has more tear-jerking moments than necessary. Even without counting the musical parts, there could be a whole lot of trimming that would make this 2 hour and a half monstrosity just a little more digestible.

Krrish the superhero? He isn't one bit cool. His powers would appear to include super speed, super strength, super reflexes and his weird super jumping power. His powers also must include being able to create a constant wind in front of him so that his hair and cape always flow. He has tears in his for what seems to be all the time. I mean, isn't there a limit to how much a super hero should be crying without appearing to be weak? spoiler Krrish is also always saving kids who are artificially used to raise the stakes. Something bad is happening, here's a shot of a kid about to die, save them Krrish!

The special effects are touted as being on par with what Hollywood does but I have to respectfully disagree. Shots of Krrish high up on skyscrapers jumping around are very video gamey and it's pretty clear that a lot of wire-work has been used. There's a lot more than I could nitpick but the reality is that there are Hollywood movies older than Krrish 3 that look way better and way more convincing. I'm sure that Krrish 3 is some of the finest work Bollywood has ever done in terms of special effects but there's a lot of work to be done still if they want to be claim that they can do effects as well as Hollywood can.

The final act of Krrish 3 had me thinking that it was a mash up of The Matrix plus Man of Steel along with the stylings of Batman & Robin. Sounds harsh, but just take a look at the set of Kaal's lab, of his "final form" and of the city battle between him and Krrish. Not only are the effects bad but clearly, the scriptwriters and Roshan himself are big fans of The Matrix and Man of Steel. The "science" that exists in the film is incredibly dumb and unbelievable and the camera work is very repetitive with many rising crane shots, arc shots and even Dutch angles. The soundtrack is just as uninspired as well.

Krrish 3 is a bloated, visually unimpressive film that is probably really tough for any non-Indian movie watcher to get through. The promise of great special effects isn't true and Krrish is just not anywhere close to being as cool as the superheros everyone already knows. The story is one big copy of a whole bunch of movies but one thing I'll say is that I still like Hrithik Roshan. I don't even really know why. His performance as the father of Krishna is OK and he's in incredibly good shape too. In the end though, Krrish 3 overpromises and underdelivers.
