This along with Le Samourai is the best Melville. A gorgeous war film where every characters' deep sense of regret and remorse is felt.

I'm breathless.. This movie is perfect on all levels, a true masterpiece.

Please do yourself a favor and watch this one if you haven't seen it yet (and if you have, just watch it again for god's sake!).

This is, without a doubt, Melville's masterpiece, although I do prefer Le samourai.

Viva la resistance! Really enjoyed the minimalistic use of the music in this. As well as the overall somber tone and characters. Beautiful.

The movie was shot by a former resistant after a novel written in 1943 by another resistant, and inspired by real-life fighters.
Ironically, in this very silent movie, the director had to make the film without talking to the main actor, because they had quarelled on the previous one and wouldn't talk to each other (they still had to work together because they were bound by a contract).
