Brilliant masterpiece from Max Ophüls! Beautiful actress Martine Carol in a splendid visually sumptuous film! A story of a real life cabaret dancer and her affairs, including Franz Liszt and Ludwig I of Bavaria. Superb!

Interesting concept (circus scenes introducing flashbacks) but I just can't get into it. Maybe I need to be in a better mood.

The wooden performance is very much a part of the magic.

Ophuls films are so talky it's hard for non French speaking viewers to view the film. I enjoyed the last half hour though.

Extremely wooden performance from the film's star - where's the much lauded magic? No, this is one tedious and lifeless movie.
