Pasolini is essentially unmatched in filmmaking ability, and Medea could be the peak of his practice (Accattone provokes awe within me too). It is probably impossible to make a better version of Medea than this. Medea is an incredibly troubling movie, it shows up the sterility of the modern, and the deliriousness of atavism, it's a vision of a time and place of fearsome wonders and terrifying vivacious cruelty. I watched some Pagnol movies recently, and he seems to have had an understanding of truer forms of kindness and justice. Pasolini in this film is the absolute opposite, vengeance, flesh, solar implacability.
