The story was a bit slow in my opinion, but the great acting and amazing cinematography really made up for that. Film title matches the overall feeling of the movie.

Loved the pacing of this movie that makes you feel totally helpless and makes the passing of time agonizing. Art is certainly an effective tool to convey mental illness. Loved the intent focus on the expressions of Claire and Justine; phenomenal acting from the cast in general. Don't watch before bed, the melancholy is infectious.

I was, surprisingly, not bored, and that's surprising because from the beggining we see it's a slow path movie, but its so beautiful, so well acted and it drags us so deeply to those events, that it couldn't be boring for even a second. For moments i've found myself scared of the situation as if i was there with them. Gotta mention, once again, how beautiful the photograph is, and I love Ms. Dunst.

Wow. That was absolutely brilliant. It gave me chills, which is incredibly rare. An absolutely beautiful film, but I'm not sure if it's something that I'd watch again.
It's definitely a slow-burner, and has a very uneasy tension throughout the entire film. There is no spoiler, but in a way that adds to its beauty.

In regards to the comment by user ChrisReynold:
I feel sorry for him, as I'm sure he'd be more satisfied if he fully understood the things that he complained about. spoiler
I understand his comment is nearly 5 years old now, but it's the first thing I saw when I added this film to my watchlist. It left a bad impression on me, but thankfully the movie proved him otherwise.

My only real complaint was that spoiler

I normally only watch these types of films once, but I'm considering making an exception with this one. It was so captivating, and I'd like to see it again with the same knowledge spoiler that she had.

This wasn't my movie. Boring and tedious. 2nd part is more interesting but really hated the wedding segment.

Very boring, but fantastically made and acted. If you appreciate, and I mean really APPRECIATE good cinematography and "realistic" acting, this is for you. Otherwise I don't recommend it. On a side note, the first 30 minutes or so are rather interesting because of the humor brought on by Dunst's father.

As I understood it the Earth was the big planet and Melancholia the small one.

one of the best movies of the year. Lars Von Trier shows his cinematography in this movie again.

Better than Another Earth and dealing with similar themes and emotions this rings far truer. Liked it, but didn't love it. Kirsten Dunst is amazing.

As made overtly clear by the films title, Melancholia seems to be made with the intention of evoking melancholy feelings in the viewer. People often watch sad movies, they cry a little, get over it ten minutes later and then feel great. These films provide a sort of contrast for the viewer. This is not one of those films. This film has you nervous the whole time and is just flat out depressing without hope for convalescing.
