The only thing missing from this movie is the relationship within the Vice Squad. If Justin Theroux, Barry Shabaka Henley and Dom Lombardozzi weren't playing Zito, Castillo & Switek, I would not care for them as much as I cared for their TV Show counterparts.

But overall, this is a visually stunning movie, as always with Michael Mann. I give it a 3.5/5.

Michael Mann is an American director who works in the Honk Kong idium - he's learned that energy can often triumph over a weak or formulaic story. It worked for Blackhat, but not, I fear, for Miami Vice. Crockett and Tubbs get involved with a drug cartel in their feature film return, and though Jamie Foxx is fine in the later part, Colin Farrell walks around with a distracting blond mullet and has scarcely any chemistry with bad girl Gong Li so we never really believe their romance. But then, the characters are so thinly drawn, it's hard to care for anyone (Naomie Harris may be the exception). Mann throws in gratuitous sex scenes as if he were evoking the 1980s when Miami Vice was on TV, but little else does. It perhaps doesn't help that I never saw more than a couple of episodes of Vice back in the day, but I'm not sure it matters. The film is a fair crime picture, with a lot of macho posturing and cool camera work/lighting. But no more than that. I was weighing whether or not to bail out after the first 25 minutes. And if I had worked on this movie, I think I'd be pissed at Mann for rendering the credits in an illegible ultraviolet font.

If you can get past the stylised bits of action and occasional shots that look they're from a perfume ad, then you may find this to be a great action drama that has a good amout of realism in it.

If you were even remotely a fan of Miami Vice the tv show then you know full well that it was a love letter to the 80's and the "decade of excess" oozed from every reel of celluloid. This is a current, modern take, almost as if Sonny and Tubbs were jettisoned into the future. It's gritty, but Michael Mann has to have known that the magic that he created on the series would be seriously lacking here.

I expected very little from this movie.

Got much more than I could've asked for.
For this type of movie, I'd say it's slightly underrated.
There ain't no theatrical "Die Hard" one liner, save the day bullshit, this is just a solid, gritty action movie.

Also, the decision to film this almost entirely in handheld was absolutely stellar.

Editing is some of the worst I've ever seen. First act is all info dump and shaky action. What a total trainwreck.

terrible movie, no character development

looks like it was made only for the TV show fans, since anyone who watches it without any previous context would certainly sleep within 1 hour

When a movie is worst than the TV series it's impossible to be good..
