A great performance by leads Davis and Rains. They naturally seem an odd coupling and that serves to fuel the tension between them and pushes the plot forward. I tend to like the classic old films that have a strong sort of moral take on vanity and this one has it in spades. Worth a watch despite it's unusual length. 150 minutes is what you'd expect a classic epic film to sit at, not a Bette Davis drama.

An odd film even for the time - tonally all over the place, and at least a half-hour too long for its own good. But the performances of Davis and Rains are top-notch, and certain scenes are worth the watching. 6.5/10
